WingChun is based entirely on logic and sound body mechanics.
Men and women of all ages and fitness levels enjoy learning
to defend themselves with WingChun. Training in WingChun
gives the student better coordination, balance, visual
and tactile awareness and the ability to make the best
use of their body structure. Correctly applied, WingChun
does not require brute force or high levels of physical
fitness or flexibility. One of the most important aspects
of WingChun is adaptability:
-The techniques adapt to the movements and physical size/strength
of an attacker.
-The training teaches the student how to adapt the system
to their own capabilities
-Although the system as a whole is very sophisticated,
it is taught in a structured and logical way, allowing
the student to gradually adapt to the new ideas
-A WingChun exponent does not resist the assault of an
attacker, but uses the attacker's force against them,
constantly adapting to the changes of movement. This idea
can be carried through to verbal confrontations and many
other areas of life.
WingChun is not a sport, but a sophisticated self-defence system. Sometimes when a martial art is made more sport-orientated, some of the most efficient and effective techniques (for real self-defence) are taken out for the safety of the competitors. This is not the case with WingChun. Of course safety is paramount in training, but the realities of self-defence are also addressed.
In the early stages of training, a student must learn many techniques that are unfamiliar to them. However, once a student has learnt the basic movements, they learn a variety of ways to use them rather than learning more and more movements. This means that in self-defence, less time is spent on wondering what to do, and more time is spent on dealing with it!
Regular WingChun training improves muscle, tendon and ligament strength, balance, coordination and relaxation, as well as giving students a much better chance of defending themselves.
The principles a student learns to deal with physical attack can also be applied to verbal confrontations and in many other areas of life. This, coupled with the increased self-confidence and awareness that a student will feel through consistent training, can make for a more positive and fulfilling life.
